Serving as Ushers

Ushers, sometimes called  lay ministers of hospitality, are intended to help create a welcoming, respectful atmosphere for parishioners and visitors attending Sunday Mass.

Their tasks are important, yet simple: 
 

• Open the inner doors of the Church before Mass and close them after Mass starts
• Help people find seatsH
• Identify families or individuals to bring up the gifts at the offertory
• Take up collections
• Help guide an orderly communion procession
• Hand out Church bulletins as people depart
• Straighten up the pews after Mass is concluded
• Last but not least, they must be prepared to attend to emergencies that arise during Mass.

Contrary to the perceptions of some, perhaps, ushering is not reserved for older adults or senior citizens. Young women and men are encouraged to volunteer, so that the usher corps is representative of the parish community as a whole.  The only prerequisite is regular attendance at Holy Mass on Sundays and Holy Days and occasional availability for special ceremonies.
