Preparation for First Communion is generally a two-year process. Many children begin their preparation for Penance and Eucharist in the first grade and receive First Penance and First Eucharist at the end of second grade. However, children may begin preparation for Penance and Eucharist in any grade (elementary or high school); the preparation time is still two years.
Sacramental preparation is comprised of two components: 1) ongoing grade-level faith formation in religious education class or Catholic school; and 2) parish and family-centered sacrament preparation, which includes regular Sunday Mass attendance, participation in a retreat, and at-home materials or projects. Further details about these and any other program requirements are given at sacramental preparation meetings each fall.
