Living With Loss
The loss of an important person in our lives is one of the most difficult
lifetime experiences. Our program, Living With Loss, is designed to offer
personal support, practical ideas and a spiritual perspective to help you move
through the bereavement process. Groups are limited in size and will meet weekly
for seven sessions, each lasting 1 ½ to 2 hours. Please plan to attend all
sessions. There is no fee for this program, just a commitment to attend.
Fall session begins Wednesday October 7th 2009. Twice yearly programs will be offered in the Fall and Spring.

Camp St Charles
Camp St. Charles provides a religious and educational environment summer camp for underprivileged boys and girls. Established 57 years ago, it is run by the Salvatorian Fathers & Brothers and lay Salvatorians. Offering four (4) 2-week summer camp sessions for children 7-13 years of age. NEW FOR 2009: One (1) long weekend of FAMILY CAMP, for whole families to enjoy Camp St. Charles together. Camp St. Charles is fully accredited and is located in Southern Maryland, 2 hours from DC.

Catholic Charities
Serves to bring help for today and hope for the future to the most vulnerable among us. Catholic Charities assist people in need of skill development to move from crisis and isolation to stability and growth. Services include crisis assistance with food, mortgage/rent and utilities, homeless shelters, and immigration services, to name a few. A new program established in 2008 is Parish Partners, which extends assistance to clients at the local parish level. www.catholiccharitiesdc.org
Dorothy Day Place
Located in Rockville, MD, Dorothy Day Place is a transitional shelter that offers housing for 20 single unaccompanied homeless women providing 2 meals per day, shower & laundry facilities, and case managers. The women come from abusive situations, have been evicted or have no other options for housing with relatives. Operated by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington, referrals are needed for placement. The shelter accepts donations of toiletries, towels, sheets, and sometimes small appliances to help residents transition into their own apartments. St. Raphael parishioners assist the shelter with shelter meals on designated days of each month. If interested in participating, contact the Social Concerns Office.
Christ House

Christ House is a 33-bed residential medical facility that serves the homeless and seriously ill. Located in Washington, DC, patients receive medical care, case management, nutritious meals, clothing, addictions treatment, long-term housing placement assistance and other supportive services on a 24-hour per day basis. Since opening in 1995, Christ House has had more than 5,900 admissions representing over 3,600 individual homeless persons. 202-328-1100, www.christhouse.org
Community Ministries of Rockville (CMR)
CMR offers a spectrum of services to assist Rockville residents deal with crisis financial and social issues. Programs include Chase, Jefferson and Hope Homeless Shelters, Hispanic Outreach, Elderly Ministries, Emergency Assistance (REAP Program) and the new Health Program designed to meet the needs of Rockville’s uninsured residents. Opening 42 years ago, CMR has provided assistance to an excess of 5,200 elderly, families in crisis, recent immigrants, working poor and homeless people in 2008. Covenant House
Covenant House provides shelter and other services to homeless and runaway youth, ages 16 to 21, in Washington, DC. Objectives of services provided are to (1) provide a sanctuary from the danger of street life or abusive homes; (2) teach positive values for living; (3) provide a constructive and structured environment for at-risk youth; and (4) assist youth to identify and make positive life choices.

Gabriel Network
Gabriel Network is a grassroots, faith-based non-profit support network that provides practical, emotional and spiritual assistance to women and families facing crisis pregnancies. The Silver Spring House is an established home that helps up to three pregnant women who would otherwise not have the support to give birth to their babies. St. Raphael’s provides financial support to the Silver Spring House with a monthly donation and has been the beneficiaries of parish level fundraising activities.

Gift of Peace
The Gift of Peace Convent is a home for homeless men and women and is run and staffed by the Missionaries of Charity, founded by Mother Teresa. St. Raphael’s provides financial support with an annual Poor Box Collection as well as the Annual Advent Luncheon where we host over 100 guests from the shelter with a home-cooked meal and Christmas entertainment. Volunteer opportunities to participate by donating food items for the luncheon or time during the day of the event are available. Watch the parish bulletin for details on how to volunteer.
Hospice Caring
The only nonmedical volunteer hospice in Montgomery County, Hospice Caring provides practical and emotional support to terminally ill adults, children and their families. Services provided include support and advocacy, companionship and practical care, assistance with household tasks and errands, and transportation to doctor and treatment appointments. Programs include adult bereavement support groups, children’s bereavement programs including the Good Grief Club and Camp Caring, a weekend camp for children ages 8 to 12. House of Ruth

House of Ruth helps women, children and families who are striving to overcome childhood trauma, domestic violence, homelessness, mental health disorders and substance abuse. By providing a nurturing, structured and safe housing environment, House of Ruth helps the client to achieve their highest potential. There are 13 sites located in the Washington, DC area. Interfaith Works
Formerly Community Ministries of Montgomery County (or CMMC), Interfaith Works manages homeless shelters (Community Based Shelter, Sophia House and Horizon House), eviction prevention programs (Hand to Hand Project), family support services with customized teams to assist them to optimize their potential (Friends in Action) and clothing centers offering goods to the underprivileged (Interfaith Clothing Centers). St. Raphael’s provides monthly donations to support the efforts of Interfaith Works in our community as well as being actively involved in feeding programs at the homeless shelters, contributing clothing through our quarterly clothing drives and having parishioners on teams for the Friends in Action Program. www.iworksmc.org
Opendoor
A community development organization serving Baltimore, Opendoor strives to provide hope to some of the poorest residents of Maryland. Efforts include provision for adult learning, workforce development, food pantry and feeding ministry, grief and family counseling and support and Bible study groups. Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless
This organization leads the effort to end homelessness in our community by creating housing options, providing supportive services, and facilitating collaboration, education and advocacy. Programs include a year round Men’s Emergency Shelter serving over 950 men each year; Safe Havens transitional housing and support services for mentally ill homeless men and women; Partnership for Permanent Housing for families transitioning from homeless shelters; and Seneca Heights Apartments that provides permanent housing for 40 single adults and transitional housing for 17 families preparing to move to a permanent home. 301-217-0314, www.mcch.net

Mobile Med
During the past forty years, Mobile Med has provided quality health care to the uninsured, low income, working poor and homeless of Montgomery County. Their goal is to reduce the barrier to receiving health care, such as long waiting periods for appointments, cultural issues that interfere with provision of care and complicated paperwork requirements. Mobile Med addresses the needs of chronic conditions, including diabetes, obesity, and hypertension, among others. Head Start Centers are visited to provide medical care to children.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish (Parriquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen)
St. Raphael Catholic Church has had a Twinning relationship with the parish since 1988. Located in Padre Las Casas, Azua, Dominican Republic, several delegations of St. Raphael parishioners have traveled to the DR to provide medical and dental treatment to local Dominicans as well as assist the Pastor with adolescent activities and parish hall maintenance. Our own Pastor, Fr. Bill Finch, traveled to the DR in February of 2003. Financial support to the Pastor and Sisters who serve the parish is ongoing.

Reaching the Unreached of India
A direct poverty relief ministry founded by De La Salle Christian Brothers from the UK, its programs focus on promoting the welfare of children and women in the poorest communities of India. Contributions have gone towards the establishment of schools, day care centers, vocational training, medical and aged/infirmary services and housing.
Rockville Meals on Wheels
This organization delivers meals to the elderly, disabled or individuals who are recuperating from illness that are otherwise unable to shop or prepare their own meals. 301-340-1559
Shepherd's Table
A community-based center located in Silver Spring, Shepherd’s Table provides a hot, nutritious meal to over 120 homeless individuals 24/7, 365 days a year since its beginnings in 1983. Sophia House

St Ann Infant & Maternity Home
St. Ann’s mission statement is “to recognize and enhance the human dignity and worth by providing residential care and services to abused and neglected children and to single pregnancies and parenting adolescents in crisis, as well as quality day care to the children of working families.” Programs include residential children and teen mother-baby programs, a day care center and Faith House, a transitional housing program for 8 young mothers and their children. St. Ann’s will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2012.

Stepping Stones
Shelter
Located in Rockville, Stepping Stones Shelter strives to address the underlying problems that lead families to homelessness. St Martin of Tours, DC
St. Martin’s has been our Twin Parish for the last 20 years. Our parish has established a working relationship that provides a cooperative effort to serve the poor and vulnerable residents of North Capitol Street. Together, both parishes provide a Thanksgiving Day Luncheon to over 300 residents as well as assembling Blessing Baskets with frozen turkeys for 200 families. The Annual Winter Coat Drive has been a collaborative effort between our parishes since 2007. St. Raphael also supports the St. Martin’s After-school Program that assists high-risk, latch-key elementary aged children of the community. This program provides a safe haven for children who live below the poverty line offering tutoring, computer skill development and recreational activities. [202-232-1144]
McKenna Center
Established in 1983, McKenna Center strives to meet the needs of the poor and homeless in the North Capitol area of Washington, DC. Services provided include a Drop-In Center for homeless men (one of only two centers in DC), a Hypothermia Unit, Drug & Alcohol Counseling and a weekly “Peace Meal” offered to those in the community. Manna Food Center
Although Montgomery County is one of America’s most affluent communities, more than 25% of its residents are at risk for hunger. Manna Food Center provides a three-day emergency food box to individuals and families as well as assisting shelters, soup kitchens, group homes and emergency assistance organizations in the county with food supplies. In FY 2005, Manna Food served over 67,000 people, half of whom were children. St. Raphael provides financial support as well as food collections to Manna Food Centers annually.
Latino Outreach Program
One of the many programs run by Community Ministries of Rockville (CMR), this program provides free English as a Second Language Classes to Hispanic adults seeking to learn or improve their English skills. Mt. Carmel Home
Mt. Carmel House provides transitional housing and outreach programs for women in Washington, DC. It is dedicated to assisting women to create pathways to permanent housing, employment, personal stability, and career training. Mt. Carmel House serves clients with one or more chronic diagnoses, including substance abuse, mental illness, HIV infection as well as hepatitis and/or TB.
