Community Buliding

PARISH COUNCIL (adult)
Duties: Ten to twelve members of the parish are elected by the parish community to adhere to the Parish Pastoral Council Bylaws while representing the best interest of the parish community.
Time: The Parish Council meets with the Pastor nine times each year to discuss various agenda items concerning the parish community.
Special Skills: A willingness to represent the parish community in an advisory role that involves identifying needs and making recommendations on various topics that arise throughout any given year.

PARISH PICNIC (teen, adult)
Duties: Jobs include planning, set-up, cooking and/or clean up and activity leadership. Volunteers recruited in the fall.
Time: September each year.

TECHNOLOGY ADVISORY COMMITTEE OF THE PARISH COUNCIL
Duties: Advise parish staff on utilization of technology to support parish office functions and services to parishioners. Volunteers welcome.
Time: Meetings as needed.
Special Skills: Creative vision of how to maximize use of existing & new digital technology in furthering the parish mission; experience in technology (phone, computer, public address system, etc.).

Duties: Advise on developing parish website, where possible write programs for desired features. Volunteers welcome.

Faith Formation

CATECHISTS (adults and young adults)
Duties: Help children grow in faith through their participation in the parish Religious Education Program. Volunteers needed for each new school year.
Time: Once a week (3 to 4 hours preparation time, plus class time); September to May; training, resources, full developed lesson plans for each class is available.
Special Skills: Enjoy working with children; experience helpful, practicing Catholic.

Family Ministry

MOTHERS WITH YOUNG CHILDREN (adult)
Duties: Attend, coordinate, and administer weekly gathering of mothers with infants and preschool-aged children. Coordinate speakers, interns and some presentation materials. Volunteers welcome.
Time: Weekly 90-minute meetings September through June, several hours of additional administrative work monthly.
Special Skills: Organizational abilities; create welcoming atmosphere; interest in parenting/ marriage topics.

YOUNG ADULT (CORE TEAM)
Duties: Developing relational ministry with teenagers by planning and leading youth group activities through talks, skits, meditations, etc. Assisting youth minister in implementing teen meetings.
Time: Meet once a week at youth meeting and once every two weeks for CORE meeting.
Skills: Willingness to share faith/life with teenagers.

Duties: Participate in prayer regimen for the youth of the parish and for their special intentions. Volunteers welcome.

LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS (teen, adult)
Duties: A number of varied opportunities from reviewing, covering, and typing new material for inclusion into the library to checking in, repairing, shelving, and inventory of existing material on a day to day basis. Volunteers welcome.
Time: Varies by need and availability of volunteer.
Skills: If you have a love for reading and/or learning more about our faith and our Church through different forms of media; if you feel the call to serve but are not sure in what capacity...stop by the library and see what we have to offer.

Prayer and Worship

ALTAR SERVERS (child, teen or adult)
Duties: Assist the priest during Mass by holding the Sacramentary, helping at presentation of the gifts, carrying the cross when needed.

Time: To be available for weekly Mass, plus initial training and on-going formation sessions.
Special Skills: An ability to be reverent and attentive at Mass; dependability; attention to detail.

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF THE EUCHARIST (adult 18 and over)
Duties: Distribution of the Eucharist , cleaning vessels after Mass.

Time: Assigned for one month, every other month, plus initial training and on-going formation sessions.
Special Skills: Love and reverence for the Eucharist; ease in public settings; Catholic in good standing who has received the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist).

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF THE EUCHARIST TO THE HOMEBOUND (adult)
Duties: Bring Eucharist to and pray with homebound parishioners regularly.
Need someone one Sunday a month to substitute taking communion to Raphael House residents.

Special Skills: Extraordinary Minister. Ability to comfort people with prayer; a willingness to grow in the Lord's service.

LECTORS (adult)
Duties: Proclaim the Scripture readings at Mass with reverence and understanding.
Time: Once a month; formation session; personal time spent in study and reflection on the Word.
Special Skills: A love for God's Word and desire to study it more deeply; a clear speaking voice; an ease speaking in front of people.

CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD (teen, adult)
Duties: Lead children through the Liturgy of the Word prayer experience during regular weekend Masses. Volunteers welcome.
Time: One Sunday a month, September-June; monthly planning meetings to prepare for scheduled liturgy; initial and ongoing training; participants work in teams to plan and conduct liturgy.
Special Skills: Adults who enjoy working with children, reflecting on and sharing the Word; musicians and singers also needed.

SACRISTANS (adult)
Duties: Prepare for Mass by setting out vessels, bread and wine, lighting altar candles, etc. Take home dirty vestments, altar cloths, purificators and towels, and wash/clean and press them.
Time: As needed (arrive 30 minutes prior to Mass); plus initial training session and an annual formation meeting.
Special Skills: A caring eye for detail; a desire to help "behind the scenes".

WEDDING SACRISTANS/COORDINATORS (adult or couples)
Duties: Learn duties of the Sacristans in order to provide assistance to Priests and Deacons presiding at weddings. Periodically attend wedding rehearsals and weddings and act as liaison to engaged couples in placing flowers and other set up activities for the wedding ceremony.
Time: Initial training; then as assigned at various weddings.
Special Skills: A caring attitude and willingness to support the Sacrament of Marriage.

SANCTUARY SOCIETY (adult)
Duties: Washing and refilling holy water dishes, clearing off counters in the vestibule and sacristy, straightening books in the pews, picking up trash, dusting and sweeping around the altar, cleaning the glass doors between vestibule and church, periodically polishing the brass. Volunteers welcome.
Time: Approximately 1-2 hours with a partner once a month on Saturday or Monday mornings after 9:00 AM Mass.
Special Skills: None-Just a desire to help "lighten the load."

ARIMATHEANS (adults)
Duties: Participate in Funeral Mass, including altar server, lector, communion minister; pre-Mass set up and post Mass put away. Does not involve wake or graveside services. Volunteers welcome.
Time: Arrive 30 minutes prior to Mass for set up: up to an hour for Mass, 20 minutes to re-set space; initial training on an individual basis.
Special Skills: Regular availability at least three days a week; respond on 24-48 hour notice. Not allergic to smoke/incense.

USHERS (adult, family)
Duties: Seat parishioners; help families carry gifts at offertory procession; pass baskets at collection time; ensure orderly flow at communion time, pass out bulletin at door after mass.
Time: One Mass every week (arrive 20 minutes early), plus initial training and an annual formation session.
Special Skills: An ability to graciously welcome people.

BAPTISM GARMENTS (adult)
Duties: Cutting out, sewing and/or embroidery. Volunteers welcome.

PRAYER TREE (adult)

ADULT CHOIR (adult)
Duties: Sing at Mass each week with a group of 25 committed musicians. Volunteers welcome.
Time: 10:00 AM Mass each week, plus one Wednesday evening rehearsal each week, 7:30 - 9:30 PM.
Special Skills: A clear voice and a good ear (sight-reading skills desirable but not necessary).

CANTORS (teen or adult)
Duties: Lead the assembly in prayerful song with an accompanist. Volunteers welcome.
Time: One Mass every two or three weeks (arrive 30 minutes early); periodic cantors' meetings; private preparation time at home or with accompanist.
Special Skills: A skilled solo voice; a deep sense of prayerfulness and reverence for the assembly's sung prayer.

Duties: Lead the assembly in prayerful song with a group of 40 youth. Volunteers welcome.

Social Responsibility

SOCIAL CONCERNS COMMITTEE (Adult)
Duties:  Work with Social Concerns subcommittee members to plan parish activities that carry out our call to serve the poor and vulnerable within the themes from Catholic Social Teaching.  Volunteer representatives are needed.
Time:  Meets bi-monthly, time and date TBA.
Special Skills:  Ability and willingness to work with others in direct service to those persons needing assistance.

RESPECT FOR LIFE COMMITTEE (Adult and older teens)
Duties:  The St. Raphael Respect for Life Committee affirms that human life is a precious gift from God to be protected from conception to natural death.  The goal of this committee is to promote in compassion and love the sacredness of all human life through prayer, education, and witness.  This is accomplished through the planning and implementation of programs that promote a culture of life; educating and informing the parish about life issues; participating in special Masses and Rosaries; lobbying for life through correspondence with and participation in Lobby Night activities; support pro-life organizations through volunteering and parish activities; participating in the annual March for Life Rally and hosting pilgrims from other states; praying at local abortion facilities.  New membership and volunteers are welcomed.
Time:  Monthly meetings on the first Monday of the month; 9:45 – 11:00 AM; other times as necessary.

STONE SOUP SUNDAY (Adult, teen and family)
Duties:  Assist with non-perishable food collection to benefit the St. Martin’s Food Pantry located in Gaithersburg, MD on the first Sunday of the month.  Volunteers are to accept donations that are handed to them from parishioners coming to Mass and load them into the truck which is parked in the circle of the parking lot.  Also collect any cash donations in a separate envelope to benefit DPHW, a shelter for women and children in Washington, DC.  Volunteers are needed for 15 minutes before and after each Mass on the scheduled weekend of the collection.
Time: A total of 30 minutes is required for each scheduled Mass.
Special Skills:  Ability to lift food packages and pack the truck efficiently.

CLOTHING DRIVE (Adult, teen and family)
Duties:  Sort donated clothing and/or assist in the delivery of collection to local agencies.  Volunteers are welcomed.
Time:  Quarterly, focused drives are held as published in the parish bulletin.  Approximately 2 ½ hours on the Monday after the drive are required for sorting and delivery.  (September, January, April)
Special Skills:  A willingness to help those in need.

LABOR OF LOVE (Adult)
Duties:  Knit or crochet infant blankets or hats for hospital nurseries and low-income families.  Participants meet in the Library of the Raphael House Assisted Living facility.  Volunteers are welcomed.  Please call coordinator due to limited space availability.
Time:  Wednesdays, 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon and Fridays, 2:00 to 4:00 PM
Special Skills:  Willingness to learn the skill of knitting or crocheting and see a project to completion.

PRISON MINISTRY (Adult)
Duties:  This Ministry serves the Montgomery County Correctional Facility located in Clarksburg, MD (exit 18 off I270).  The Ministry consists of being present for Masses or communion services on Sundays and for catechism classes and Scripture sharing on Wednesday evenings and can provide one-on-one visitation at the facility for pastoral care and prayer.  The Ministry serves both English and Spanish speaking inmates.  There are also opportunities for after care serving as a mentor to inmates when released from the facility.  Volunteers are welcomed.
Time:  Flexible for drop-ins and for after care.
Special Skills:  Ability to listen and desire to help.  Bi-lingual skills are helpful but not required.

RAPHAEL HOUSE (Adult, teen)
Duties:  Provide volunteer hours for the following activities: (1) Reading out loud in the daytime hours any day; (2) Drive residents to medical appointments, mostly within five miles; (3) Spend time one on one with a resident any day; (4) Help with Bingo held Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, 2 to 4 PM.  Volunteers are welcomed.
Time: One to four hours as specified.
Special Skills:  Caring attitude with older persons.

THE LORD’S TABLE (Adult)
Duties:  Provides an afternoon meal at the Soup Kitchen located at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Gaithersburg, MD on a specified day of the month.  Participants work as teams in the preparation, serving and clean-up duties of this meal service.
Time:  First Thursday of the month, 1:00 to 5:00 PM.  Commitment for October –June.
Special Skills:  Ability to work with teams of people in the preparation and service of food and to have a caring attitude to the poor and vulnerable amongst us.

THANKSGIVING COLLECTION OF FROZEN TURKEYS & NONPERISHABLE FIXINGS (Adult, teen and family)
Duties:  Set up the receiving boxes in the school reception area for non-perishable donations during food drive; organizing the sorting and packing of items collected for transportation, including non-perishables and frozen turkeys the weekend before Thanksgiving for transportation to St. Martin’s DC at an agreed upon time;  arrange for suitable vehicles and drivers for the transportation of collected items.
Time: 2 to 8 hours
Special Skills:  If volunteering as a driver, need a valid driver’s license.  There is a need for strong backs given the lifting of boxes required.

THANKSGIVING DINNER AT ST. MARTIN’S DC
(Adult, teen & family)

Duties:  Activity Coordinator:  Solicits donations from area grocery stores for the event; picks up donations of bread from pre-arranged bakery/grocery store the day before the event; submits appropriate advertizing in bulletin and room set up requests according to procedures and deadlines.  [Sandy Shamburek, 240-856-2514, sshamburek@straphaels.org]
Event Coordinator:  Solicits volunteers to receive the cooked food in the TR Kitchen the night before Thanksgiving as well as volunteers to transport the food down to St. Martin’s on Thanksgiving Day.  Departure from St. Raphael’s will be by 7:00 AM Thanksgiving morning.  Also assists at St. Martin’s with the carving of turkeys, preparation and delivery of pre-portioned meals for the Meals on Wheels Program for community shut-ins; coordinate dessert table; assist with room decoration and table set up; serve dinner and assist with greeting guests and eating with them in the spirit of the holiday.  [Patrick Graveline,
Clean-Up Coordinator:  Solicits volunteers to assist with the clean up of the dining hall, including trash removal, breakdown of tables and chairs and washing of floor area.  May also assist with the cleaning of pots and pans in the food preparation area.

Special Skills:   Well organized with good public relations skills.  Must be able to stand for long hours and lift heavy objects.

MOTHER TERESA’S SOUP KITCHEN CHRISTMAS PARTY (Adult)
Duties:    Activity Coordinator:  Communicate with the Sisters of Charity for the event regarding total numbers of guests for transportation arrangements; coordinates with St. Elizabeth’s School for student volunteers; coordinate food donation effort including solicitation of corporate donations; submit appropriate advertising in bulletin and room set up requests according to procedures and deadlines.  [Sandy Shamburek, 240-864-2514, sshamburek@straphaels.org]

ADVENT GIVING TREE (Adult, teen, family)
Duties:  Participate in leadership team for planning and organizing; volunteers sign up for specific duties, including:  Placing tags on the trees the weekend Advent begins; moving collected gifts from receiving receptacles to storage areas; sorting and packing gifts in TR for delivery to recipient organizations/agencies; assist in the delivery of gifts; clean up duties of TR after sorting and packing.  Volunteers are welcomed.
Time:  Moving gifts on Sunday after all Masses during Advent; sorting/packing day is usually the 3rd or 4th Sunday of Advent; help is needed for 2 to 6 hours on this day.
Special Skills:  Leadership, enthusiasm and strong backs.

BLOOD DRIVE (Adult)
Duties:  Recruit donors after Masses one weekend, send reminder cards.  On drive day, sign in donors, assist in completing forms and serve refreshments to donors.  Volunteers are welcomed.

EARTH COMMUNITY (Adult)
Duties:  Plan and organize Care of Creation Issues for action and advocacy.  This is accomplished by attending Earth Community potluck gatherings that include prayer and discussion on topic of interest.  At times, discussions are centered on environmental videos or books/articles.  New membership is welcomed.
Time:  Monthly meeting, date and time TBA.  Special Lenten Programs often offered.

OPERATION RICE BOWL (Adult)
Duties:  Writes short weekly bulletin articles for publication during Lenten Season that discuss the work in International Development by CRS.
Time:  The proceeds of the collection at the Ash Wednesday Masses benefit ORB.

BREAD FOR THE WORLD OFFERING OF LETTERS (Adults)
Duties:  Write an article for the parish bulletin that explains the focus of the year’s Campaign of letters; provides assistance in the collection of signatures on pre-printed letters and to custom correspondence to state representatives during a specified weekend in the year.
Time:  Annual campaign that requires approximately 30 minutes after each Mass scheduled.
Special Skills:  Willingness to advocate for the poor here and abroad.

COMMUNITY-BASED SHELTER (Adult, teen and family)
Duties:  Prepares & brings a meal (breakfast, cereal, bag lunch, or evening hot dinner) for current shelter guests; serves and shares the evening meal with the guests and cleans up afterwards; collects donations of toiletries, food, paper goods, linens, etc. as needed by shelter.  Volunteers are welcomed.
Time:  1 to 3 hours
Special Skills:  Cooking, serving food and ability to be gracious host/hostess

FRIENDS IN ACTION (Adult)
Duties:  As a member of a team of volunteers, offering mentoring & companionship to low-income families transitioning to independent living.  Volunteers are welcomed.

Special Skills:  Desire to help a needy family by giving one’s time.  Select skills in budgeting, meal preparation and nutrition etc. can be very helpful to the team.

GABRIEL PROJECT (Adult)
Duties:  Assist women in crisis pregnancies through various types of support: prayer, transportation, meals, donation of clothing and baby products; opportunity to provide a “shepherding home,” loving and stable environment and befriend a woman in need.  St. Raphael’s works with the Gabriel Project Team from St. Catherine Labouré.  Written materials are available.  Volunteers are welcomed.
Time:  Varies according to assignment and need; periodic orientation session; bi-annual state-wide meeting.
Special Skills:  Ability to show unconditional love, set boundaries; parenting skills welcomed but not necessary; good listening skills helpful; willingness to show respect for life by combining special power of prayer with commitment to service.

GABRIEL HOUSE/SILVER SPRING (Adult)
Duties:  Give support to three, pregnant young women in Silver Spring; assist in house maintenance.  Volunteers are welcomed.

LEGISLATIVE NETWORK (Adult)
Duties:  Sends letters, faxes, e-mails and/or makes telephone calls to legislators on issues of important to the doctrines of the Catholic Faith.  Participate in annual Lobby Night activity in Annapolis and one day in DC.  Volunteers are welcomed.
Time:  Varies according to the issues presented before our representatives; Lobby Night activities involve a minimum of 6 hours, including travel time.
Special Skills:  Training available annually through the Archdiocese; written materials provided through the Maryland Catholic Conference.  Anyone with a desire to advocate for the poor and vulnerable who have no voice in the political system is welcomed.

SHELTER MEAL PROGRAMS (Adult, teen and family)
Duties:  Prepares and/or delivers meals for individuals living at a shelter on pre-arranged day(s) of the month or parts of the calendar year.  Usually part of a team of volunteers for a specific shelter.  Shelters include Dorothy Day, Chase, Sophia House and Gude Drive Shelters.  Volunteers are welcomed.
Time:  Meal Preparation (1.5 hours); or meal delivery (1 hour).  Participation depends on individual teams already established.  Can be monthly, bi-monthly or at other intervals if wishing to establish a new team.
Special Skills:  Meal preparation and ability to drive a vehicle.

Stewardship

ARCHBISHOP'S APPEAL COMMITTEE
Duties:  Plan and organize the annual Archbishop’s Appeal at St. Raphael’s;  encourage full parish participation through planning, publicity, tracking and reporting of results.
Time:  Seasonal (late December through February); Montgomery County parish meeting before campaign begins and subsequent meetings at the parish level; materials provided by the Archdiocese.
Special Skills:  Organizational, writing, creative thinking and public speaking skills beneficial; a heart for the poor of the Archdiocese and an interest in promoting the Appeal.
